I did it. After the motivation post below, I knew that once I was out there, I’d be fine….and I was right! I was rocking out the miles but after I hit 9, things started to hurt 😦 The last 3 miles were no picnic, but I made it through them and I’m confident that I’ll perform fairly well at the 1/2 marathon next Sunday. I completed my run in 1:54:48…not bad!!!! I had to stop a couple times to stretch out, but all in all, I ran the whole time 🙂 I’m thinking that if I feel this good next weekend, that race day inspiration may allow me to accomplish my “lofty goal” of finishing in under 2 hours. That would be AWESOME!
As a treat to myself I decided that my post run fuel would be this:A green monster smoothie and one of my strawberry cupcakes 🙂
Smoothie made with 2 frozen bananas, 2 mini bananas, about 2 cups of spinach, this new coconut milk I found from Silk (which is only 80 calories per serving and DELICIOUS) and a teaspoon of nutella 🙂
Now it’s time to dig into my cupcake and stretch out some more because honestly — MY LEGS ARE KILLING ME!!!!
Happy Sunday everyone 🙂

If you’re in your late twenties/early thirties, you’ll remember “Saved By The Bell”. I loved watching it on Saturday mornings and then (as I got older) the endless repeats at 5:00 p.m. while my mom prepared dinner. Actually, I’m fairly confident that show still airs repeats in the mornings even today.
There was one specific show where the kids had to have their own start up business. They got seed money, etc. and had to come up with an idea to grow the business and turn a profit. Their teacher (I want to say his name was Mr. Tuttle) would hand the seed money to the groups and after each hand off he’d say, “motivated motivated motivated”. It’s pathetic that I’m almost 32 and remember this….but it’s quite often that even at the office in the mornings, my dad will come over to me and go “motivated motivated motivated” as he’s trying to get his head together for a busy day….and then we laugh.
As I sit here at 7:30 on Sunday morning with my cup of coffee (that needs reheating because I had to get up some many times to make sure Omar finished his breakfast), I find myself repeating those 3 words in my head. I’ve got 12 miles I need to knock out soon and quite honestly, I’m a little nervous. I’m afraid that this run is going to suck 😦 Here’s why:
- I definitely didn’t drink enough water yesterday
- My legs are a little tight and feeling sluggish
- I shouldn’t have eaten tons of Portuguese food last night
- I shouldn’t have drank the Sangria either (but it was SO GOOD)
- I’M TIRED!
OMG I sound like a whiney P.I.T.A. right now and I’m sure once I suit up and get out there, I’ll be fine. I just need to find the motivation to do it.
Later today I’ll post about my 12 mile adventure….here’s to hoping it’s a great one!
What do you do when you’re not motivated for a long run? Am I setting myself up for failure already?

So today I realized that so far this week I’ve run 27.4 miles. That’s the most amount of miles EVER ran by my legs in 6 days (Sunday through Friday). GO ME! I know this is mere peanuts for some people, but I’m really proud of this! Plus I was able to increase my speed and incline this week. I’m trying to push myself harder because the only way I’m going to get faster is to RUN faster!
My last long run before the half will be this Sunday. I’m shooting for 12 miles and I’m hoping that the weather cooperates. It’s rather windy outside right now and I’m hoping that it won’t stick around for the weekend.
Aside from the training, I’ve had a really crazy work week. I’m blessed with that fact that I leave my office at 12 on Fridays so I usually come home and take care of the housework and run errands. It’s been a rather nasty day outside (very rainy and windy) so it seems like the perfect “couch afternoon”. Ya know, the kind of lazy afternoon when you curl up on the couch with a blanket and watch television shows that your husband refuses to watch with you (Teen Mom2 is my guilty pleasure). After doing the cleaning I decided to just chill for the rest of the afternoon….unfortunately the dogs had other plans. It was constant barking, jumping, playing, and all around acting like crazy nuts! I seriously came up to the office to blog just so they would go lay down in the other room and be quiet! Don’t get me wrong…I love my
monsters…dogs, but geez, can’t a girl who’s been working her butt off and running a ton of miles just get some quiet couch time? Oh and the only other place the don’t “bother” me is when I’m in the kitchen cooking….they tend to just lay on the couch and watch me. So what did I do before coming up to blog you ask? Why….I made lovely strawberry cupcakes with vanilla icing that I will be wolfing down all weekend. It’s pre-run fuel …. duh!
I really wanted to take some pics of my cupcakes, but going downstairs to get the camera will awaken the
beasts dogs and I’m not so sure I want the craziness to begin again. I think I may sit in this office chair until it’s time for bed….at least it’ll be quiet.
Anyone here have a pet? If so, what?

Yup that’s right, I’m so burned out from such a crazy day that I can’t even think of a catchy title for today’s post! I’m warning you now, this post may get a little nutty since my brain hasn’t come off of doing 150 thoughts per second yet.
So today started out as any other…alarm promptly going off at 5:20 a.m. and me dragging my butt out of bed at 5:30. Note to self, must set alarm a wee bit earlier when doing longer runs in the morning.
I set off to the gym with my 5-6 mile goal in mind. To be honest, the treadmill is starting to grind on me. I wasn’t minding it too much for the past couple months, but now that I’ve gotten a taste of outdoor running on the weekends, I forgot how terribly boring treadmill runs can be! About 3.5 miles in I was starting to feel the monotony and needed to change things up a bit. For the final 2.5 miles I ran at a faster pace for a bit and then did some sprints. All in all I felt great but now that nagging tightness in my left calf has reared it’s ugly head again.
I am very thankful that we have one of these:
This is the Jeanie Rub from Core Products. Best $225 we ever spent! Originally we bought it for my husband’s back problems (several surgeries, etc etc.) but I’ve found that it is AWESOME when I’ve got muscle tightness of my own to deal with! I will be busting that thing out after I’m done with this post to work on my calf.
After a great workout I headed to the office where things just got completely nutty. Ever have one of those days where you feel like you’re being pulled in 50 different directions and no matter how hard you try to concentrate on one thing, you constantly have to change gears? Today was one of THOSE days! 4.5 hours flew by like it was 5 minutes. Even after I left the office for the afternoon (had an appt. I had to be at) my phone kept dinging every couple of minutes with new requests from people. SHEESH!! It’s no wonder I’m sitting here with a cocktail…I need to unwind after all that!
Which brings me to my next random part of this post….I’m not a big drinker and neither is my husband. But some days, it’s nice to make a flavored vodka/seltzer cocktail and just chill for the evening. Tonight’s drink of choice is pomegranate vodka and seltzer 🙂 I wish I could say this evening is relaxing after such a crazy day but I’ve got two wound up dogs that are craving my attention right now. Should be fun to try to sit on the floor and massage my calf with Omar (the great dane) shoving a slobbery toy in my face the whole time.
I read a lot of other blogs and most finish their posts with a question. I don’t think I have any readers, but I’ll throw one out there anyway:
What’s your favorite thing to do to unwind after a day of craziness?

Today I woke up and felt like a slug!
I’m thinking it’s because it was the first time in a week that I had to get up at 5:30 a.m. Although tired and wishing I could just crawl back into bed, I grudgingly put my gym clothes on and headed out in 20 degree weather for the gym.
Once there, I just couldn’t get with it! I started to run on the treadmill but my body just felt “bleh” and my stomach felt like it had a 10 lb. bowling ball in it (or maybe it was just the copious amounts of pad thai I consumed yesterday). I completed 2 miles and QUIT .. that’s right, I quit 😦
I decided to pass the time away on the arm cycle for 15 min. and then spend a good amount of time stretching.
YUP. I was a lazy slug!
Not going to beat myself up over it though…tomorrow is another day!
Tonight I’ll just enjoy being sluggish and lazy 🙂
Here’s the workouts I’ve got planned for the week:
Monday – rest
Tuesday – SLUG workout (2 miles TM, 15 min arm cycle and stretching)
Wednesday – 5 to 6 miles on the TM
Thursday – 3 miles of speedwork
Friday – 5 miles
Saturday – light cross training
Sunday – 12 miles
T minus 2 weeks before the first half and this is the last week I can hammer out the miles before tapering. Here’s to hoping the slug won’t return any time soon!

After my mockery of a run on Friday….I knew that today I had to bang out some good miles. My first half marathon is 2 weeks from today! I braved the icy windchills and set out to do at least 10 miles this morning.
The first 2 miles were chilly since it was taking a while for my body to warm up (especially since Arthur likes to take frequent pee breaks during those first couple miles as well!)
After I got warmed up I was feeling pretty good 🙂 Feet and legs were feeling strong, heart rate and breathing were nice and even. I wasn’t hauling ass but I wasn’t shuffling at a snails pace either. I knew that Arthur obviously couldn’t hang for the entire thing but he earned a new PR this morning…first 10K 🙂
After the first 6.25 miles, we stopped home so I could drop Arthur off and take a quick pee break myself (I don’t have the convenience of lifting my leg on a fire hydrant like the dog!).
I set back out and was really feeling good and decided to pick up the pace. I was ticking off the remaining miles at a 9:08 pace which I was happy with 🙂 I really wanted to go beyond the 10 but my left calf muscle was really starting to get tight so I decided to cut myself off at 10.34 miles. Better to cut the run short than have an injury two weeks before the big day!
Speaking of the big day, I have to set my sights on some goals. So here are my 3 for that day:
1.) finish strong and injury free
2.) finish at around 2 hours 20 min.
3.) finish in 2 hours or less 🙂 I know this one is lofty for my first but hey, race day inspiration might get the best of me!
With that said, I am now going to go rest my weary legs and chill on the couch!

I cheated on my trusty asics and I impulsively bought you yesterday on runningwarehouse.com. Your striking green and pink colors and basic overall cool factor had me at first click. I slept like a child on Christmas night and anxiously waited for you to be delivered by FedEx.
I opened the box and there you were….all bright and new. I couldn’t wait to take you for a run especially since today was so beautiful. As I walked around the house with you on my feet, I realized that maybe our relationship wasn’t meant to be. You’re cool factor was suddenly being overshadowed by your lack of support. But alas, being the good person that I am, I decided to give you a try anyway.
Adidas? can I say that those were the 3 most painful, horrific miles I’ve encountered in a long time? Oh how you mocked me the entire time during our 3 mile relationship … so much so that I had to take frequent walk breaks and wait for the pain to subside.
It is with great regret that I must pass up your cuteness and return you. Our relationship, though short lived, gave me that glimmer of hope that I could be the girl with the bad ass lime green running shoes. Instead, you will be exchanged for a new pair of trusty asics. Though not as cool as you – I know I can count on them for the long haul…..and at least they have a lime green stripe!
A disappointed runner 😦
