Blog Slacker!

December 20, 2010

My goodness I just realized it’s been a super long time since I’ve updated this with my training. The craziness of the holidays hasn’t put a damper on my training but it sure has me pressed for “evening time” to blog!

Last week I completed week 6 of my half marathon training and I’m feeling pretty good šŸ™‚ I have to admit though, the treadmills at my new gym are very very cushy — which presented a problem when I ran outside yesterday for the first time in two weeks. Going from a nice soft treadmill to frozen concrete did not make my legs too happy. Furthermore, I know I didn’t hydrate enough the day before and I was certainly paying for it. Thankfully, it was a step down weekend run and the misery only lasted for 3.1 miles.

This week’s training is looking like this:
Monday – off
Tuesday – 4.5 miles, stretching and core work
Wednesday – 3 miles, stretching and strength training
Thursday – 4.5 miles, stretching and core work
Friday – 50 min. cross training (will probably take a boxing class)
Saturday – Christmas Day! maybe 3 miles easy
Sunday – 7 miles

That’s all I got for now! I have two crazy dogs waiting for me to entertain them now šŸ™‚

Fantastic Day/Night!!!!

December 10, 2010

The American Cancer Society:. <–here’s my page!Ā  All I’m asking for is just one dollar!!!! Pretty please?

I know I’m posting this on Friday morning but I had to share how truly wonderful yesterday was šŸ™‚Ā  I’ll be honest and say that I didn’t wake up in the best of moods since Omar decided he wanted to wake up at 4 a.m.Ā  and whine until my alarm went off at 5:15 šŸ˜¦Ā  But I knew that I had a 4 mile training run that I needed to get in so I rolled out of bed and grumpily made my way over to the gym.Ā  Well…the 4-mile “hell” that I had planned in my head on the way over turned into a fantastic 5-miler at a nice, quick pace.Ā  I was so happy!Ā  Definitely a great way to shake my grumpy mood.Ā  AND it was the first time that I’ve ever run 5 miles before work šŸ™‚

After drinking copious amounts of green tea throughout the day (6 hours of sleep does not do me well), I had to put on a dress and attend the Holiday Gala for the Chamber of Commerce that I belong to.Ā  I was informed the day before that two of my colleagues would be tending bar and donating all of the tips to my charity.Ā  I was so incredibly thankful and HAPPY that these guys were doing this for me!Ā  Turns out that they raised $187!!!!!!Ā  I rounded off the number and sent a check for $200 to ACS this morning šŸ™‚ šŸ™‚ šŸ™‚Ā  I know that hardly anyone reads or knows about this blog but I just wanted to put it out there in cyberworld that Adam and Paul are AWESOME and everyone that donated last night…THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!

Spunky Dog and I’m a newbie all over again!

December 8, 2010

Since Saturday, the tri-state area has been engulfed in the first cold snap of the season. The highs are only in the mid 30’s and couple that with the wind chill and it feels like the low 20’s! It’s been cold and blustery — not my ideal running weather. I’m not a big fan of putting on multiple layers to go for a run…and then being really cold for the first mile or so until my body warms up. I also dislike the fact that once you’re done, you need to get inside to the warmth or you risk having your sweaty clothes freeze to your body!

On the flip side, Arthur is a BIG FAN of this chilly weather. I call him spunky monster when the temp dips below 35. When he accompanied me on my run on Sunday — he was acting like a bouncy puppy all over again! It took a good 2 miles to get him into a groove where he wasn’t pulling me. We did a nice 5 miles and then finished up our run in the fields behind my house. I knew Arthur still had gas left in the tank so I took him off his leash and zipped around like he just woke up! He’s not an old dog but he’s no spring chicken either. He’s about 5.5 years old (at least we think because we rescued him from a shelter about 4.5 years ago). This cold weather must make him feel like a puppy again because he has been HOUNDING me these past couple of days to go out and run. The unfortunate part is that it’s dark when I get home from work so we have to settle for a leash walk….even though I know he’d much rather zip around the fields. Oh well Arthur — we have to reserve the running for the weekends!

I am also happy to announce that I’m a gym newbie all over again! The husband has been trying to get back into health and fitness again and we scored an awesome deal at a local health club. Granted I was a member at a much smaller, much cheaper gym up the road — but this new place has many more amenities (indoor/outdoor pools, tennis, 125 classes a week, locker rooms to DIE for…the list goes on and on). We decided that this would be our Christmas gift to each other — a membership to this club. I am beyond excited and today was my first morning there! It took me a while to figure out how to work the treadmills (super high tech where you integrate your ipod into it and the whole thing is touch screen). I seriously need a good two hours to acclimate myself to this new place and see all it has to offer. I’m also really happy that there are so many “things” that I can incorporate into my training for the marathon — lots of strength and flexibility classes, and (get ready) and HUGE hot tub that I can soak in on days that my muscles are sore — squee!!!! They also have a one mile outside running trail that I can utilize once the weather gets nicer šŸ™‚ I can do a few miles outside and then head in to lift, stretch, etc. Geez, I can go on and on and on about how incredibly excited I am — but I’ll stop. Arthur is going to be jealous…especially since he LOVES to swim (that’s his cross training šŸ™‚ ) “Um, excuse me Mr. Gym Director…can my dog swim while I run on the treadmill?”

Training is still going well! So far I’ve completed 4 full weeks of the 1/2 training program. This week’s schedule:
Sunday – 5 miles outside with spunky monster!
Monday – rest and stretching
Tuesday – 4 miles on treadmill with stretching and core work
Wednesday – 2.75 miles on treadmill (2 run, .75 figuring out how to work the darn thing!), stretching and core work
Thursday – 4 miles on the treadmill and strength circuit
Friday – 45 min cross training (may hop in a spin class)
Saturday – rest or yoga

On the fund raising front — I really want to do gift wrapping for donations but have no clue where to fit it in this season. Must call around and see what I can find out!

Just a quick update….for like…. the one person that reads my blog…..

December 3, 2010

I knew that blogging would be a great way to log my training and hopefully entertain the very, very, VERY few readers that I seem to have (unless those stats are just me looking at the blog – LOL!) However – is it wrong that I’m having a hard time posting every day? Frankly, YES it is! I have just found that by the time I finally get a chance to relax at a night, it’s practically an hour before bedtime and to be brutally honest…..after a long day, I kinda wanna sit and relax with my husband!

So in an effort to at least keep my one random reader (hello to whomever you are!) up to date on my training efforts, here’s what I’ve been doing the last couple of days:
Tuesday –> 3.5 miles on the treadmill, stretching, lifting ,etc.
Wednesday –> 2 miles on the treadmill (at a much faster pace!), stretching and core work
Thursday –> 3.5 miles on the treadmill and a nice steady pace. Then after work I wound up walking for about 50 min. with the dogs.
Friday –> 40 min. on the AMT, stretching and lifting

So, random person that reads my blog, I have been diligent with my training!

I know most runners despise the treadmill. I’m not the hugest fan, but I do find that it holds me accountable for maintaining a current speed. In the beginning of June I set out to only run outside (and it was great!) but as the months went on, I felt like I was getting slower and slower. Maybe it’s just me, but I kind of like using the treadmill to mix things up (plus it keeps me from getting bored). I also feel that my overall speed increases because I really really push myself. Outside? not so much! So I’m hoping that by having a nice combination of treadmill runs and outside runs will really benefit my training. Not only do I want to complete the 1/2 marathon and full marathon — but I want to do it in a timely manner!

Tomorrow is a much needed rest day and I’m very excited to be meeting up with my college roommates for an afternoon of laughter. We all haven’t been together in the same room in about 5 years so I’m really looking forward to it.

How about you random reader? What have you got planned for the weekend?
